I was invited
to an art gallery in Los Angeles to hear a solo String Bass recital
by Stefano. I arrived late and the concert was in progress, I was
walking down a series of concrete halls to reach the gallery chamber
where the music was taking place. In the distance I could hear the
sounds of french horns, trombones, strings and brass all mixing in
a beautiful modal ensemble and at the time I thought that Stefano
must be playing with a chamber group. I was amazed when I entered
the gallery to find Stefano all alone playing his bass. It was then
that I realized it would be an exhilarating experience to work togheter.
And indeed it was! -----a few years later when Stefano visited me
at the Sri Moonshine Ranch, we tuned up the bass and the sinthesizer
and began to play without discussing a game plan. What followed was
a fresh and exciting landscape where spontaneous melodic and harmonic
interplay emanated from the mutual effect our playing was having on
one another.
A Lazy Afternoon Among the Crocodiles and Orfeo are collaborative
works that resulted.
I was very impressed with the fact that he played his Bass very similarly
to the North Indian Sarangi (a bowed string instrument with many sympathetic
strings that is played by gliding the fingernail along the side of
the string instead of depressing it on the fingerboard). Due to my
background as a singer of North Indian Raga, in which the sarangi
is used, I found it very exciting to sing and play with the interactive
parts Stefano provided that had a similar character to the Sarangi.
Stefano also employed a unique percussive technique that makes the
Bass sound like a Tabla Tarang (a set of tuned hand drums all tuned
to a different pitch). He also played mainly on the harmonics which
are pure tones sounding on the various nodes of the string. These
harmonics can be translated into whole number fractions that comprise
the intervals of just intonation which then results in a scale in
which each interval has its own size. We determined the scale by extracting
3 harmonics from each string. Since each string is tuned to a different
tone, that yielded a complete 12 tone scale. I then tuned my synthesizer
to the same frequencies as the harmonics on the Bass. Each time Stefano
retunes the 4 strings another scale is created. We based our improvisations
on these basic scales.

Fui invitato ad una galleria d'arte a Los Angeles per assistere
ad un recital di Stefano per contrabbasso solo. Arrivai tardi e
il concerto era cominciato, stavo attraversando una serie di sale
in cemento armato per raggiungere lo spazio in cui aveva luogo il
concerto. Sentivo da lontano il suono di corni, tromboni, archi
e ottoni che si miscelavano tutti in un bellissimo ensemble modale,
e lì per lì pensai che Stefano stesse suonando con un gruppo da
camera. Fui colto di sorpresa quando entrai nella galleria trovando
Stefano che suonava completamente solo col suo contrabbasso. Pensai
in seguito che sarebbe stata una esperienza eccitante lavorare insieme.
E lo fu davvero! --- pochi anni dopo quando Stefano venne a farmi
visita al Sri Moonshine Ranch, accordammo il contrabbasso e il sintetizzatore
e cominciammo a suonare senza discutere un piano d'azione. Ciò che
uscì fu un fresco e stimolante paesaggio in cui melodie spontanee
e interazione armonica scaturivano dall'effetto che il nostro suonare
produceva l'uno sull'altro.
Lazy Afternoon Among the Crocodiles e Orfeo sono il risultato di
questa collaborazione.
Fui molto colpito dal fatto che lui suonasse il contrabbasso
in modo molto simile al Sarangi dell'India del Nord (uno strumento
ad arco dotato di molte corde di risonanza, che si suona facendo
scorrere l'unghia lungo la corda invece di premerla contro la tastiera).
Per il mio background come cantante di raga dell'India del Nord,
in cui si usa il Sarangi, ho trovato molto stimolante cantare e
suonare con le parti realizzate interattivamente da Stefano, le
quali hanno un carattere vicino al Sarangi. Stefano ha anche impiegato
una tecnica percussiva unica che fa suonare il contrabbasso come
un Tabla Tarang (serie di tamburi intonati tutti ad altezze differenti).
Inoltre ha suonato principalmente sugli armonici, suoni puri risonanti
sui vari nodi della corda. Questi armonici possono essere interamente
espressi in frazioni numeriche che comprendono gli intervalli dell'intonazione
naturale, i quali dunque danno luogo ad una scala in cui ogni intervallo
ha la sua propria grandezza. Abbiamo costruito la scala scegliendo
tre armonici per ogni corda. Dal momento che ogni corda è intonata
su un diverso suono fondamentale, ciò fa nascere una scala completa
di dodici suoni. Quindi ho accordato il mio sintetizzatore con le
stesse frequenze degli armonici del contrabbasso. Ogni volta che
Stefano riaccorda le quattro corde viene creata un'altra scala.
Abbiamo eseguito le nostre improvvisazioni su queste scale base.
